Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Aug 27, 2010

Earlier this month two teenagers died in a Northern Ireland holiday apartment from suspected Carbon Monoxide poisoning. The tragic event, which also led to another teenager needing resuscitation, highlights the need for owners of caravan hire fleets to have gas equipment checked regularly.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning happens when you breathe Carbon Monoxide, even at low levels. The symptoms are like having flu, but can lead to death. Symptoms include headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness. The young and the old are at particular risk.

You will not know if you are being exposed to Carbon Monoxide as it is colourless, odourless and tasteless.

The symptoms are often overlooked and the only sure means of diagnosis is a blood test.

If you have a fleet of caravans which you hire out it is essential that you have gas appliances serviced on an annual basis and that you take all necessary precautions to avoid such an incident.
