Company fined £40,000 after pool drowning

Mar 9, 2010

Each year there are approximately ten deaths by drowning in swimming pools of which half of these are children aged under 15 and a recent case highlighted the need for caravan parks to ensure life guards are correctly trained.

In September 2007, a seven year old boy drowned in a wave pool. Evidence was given that the boy, who could not swim, had been able to find his way into a covered area where he could not be seen by lifeguards, and where he drowned.

The case was heard in November 2009 at Dundee Sheriff Court where Dundee Leisure admitted breaching Health and Safety regulations and was fined £40,000.

Dundee Leisure admitted failing to make sure that lifeguards were adequately trained to ensure that every part of the pool was properly supervised, particularly in relation to a potential blind spot.
