Contractors Health & Safety Assessment Scheme – CHAS
Jan 1, 2010
CHAS is a pre-qualification scheme that allows local authorities and other organisations to determine that you have the minimum standard required under the scheme. There are many benefits of belonging to the scheme.
These include:
- Avoiding duplication of your effort by reducing the need to submit multiple H&S questionnaires to clients who recognise the CHAS scheme
- Enabling you to be considered for contracts that you would previously not have even been shortlisted for (many local authorities do not consider contractors who are not CHAS assessed)
- Enabling the health and safety elements of Constructionline to be complied with
To become registered with CHAS you must apply to them using the form that can be downloaded from the CHAS website. Along with this you need to provide copies of relevant documentation, such as your H&S policy, risk assessments, training records and certificates. However, whilst the system appears relatively simple, it is reported that 4 out of 5 applications fail their first assessment.
Wilby Ltd’s consultants are familiar with the CHAS application and can assist you in completing the process successfully.
