Controlling the risk of Legionnaires Disease

Jul 24, 2012

There have been two major outbreaks of Legionnaires disease in recent months. Southwest Edinburgh is still dealing with the worst outbreak of Legionnaires disease in Scotland since the 1980’s.  Although the source remains uncertain sixteen cooling towers at four sites are the focus of an investigation into the outbreak. With the number of confirmed cases of the disease being 52, and, a further 48 suspected cases, the outbreak has also resulted in 3 deaths.

There has also now been an outbreak at a hospital in Stoke-On-Trent where 7 people are now being treated.

With this in mind it's important that businesses do all they can to prevent the risk of an outbreak. As such Debra Taylor-Mclean, Wilby Risk Management Consultant, has compiled a guide for businesses based on HSE guidelines which provides information on the disease, the responsibilities a business has to prevent it  and steps they can take to reduce the likelihood of such an incident.
