Corporate Killing Law Finally In Place
Jan 6, 2009
Over 40,000 people In the UK have been killed in commercially related circumstances between 1966 and 2006.
Following the royal assent in July of the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 it will be easier to prosecute companies for serious failings that lead to work place deaths. Companies may be found guilty of corporate manslaughter or homicide on grounds of gross negligence or failures in health & safety management.
A corporate manslaughter conviction may have a marked effect on an organisation:
- Potential clients may not want to be associated with a convicted organisation
- Recruitment may be affected as applicants may not want to work for the organisation
- The morale of the existing workforce may belowered
All of this should be a strong motive with which to encourage senior managers to review and improve the health & safety management procedures and health & safety culture within their business.
