Fire Safety Still a High Priority

Jan 1, 2010

Fire safety continues to be a high priority issue for employers and people responsible for fire safety in properties. Since the implementation of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 in October 2006 there have been 52 notices issued by the fire authorities to close properties because of fire safety fears. The latest cases in the news were for two properties in Blackpool, one of which had caught fire when 12 people were living in it.

Mark Dalton, Associate Director, Wilby Ltd states “Within the last two months I have carried out a fire risk assessment in a multi- storey, city centre property which had several fire safety failings and had not had a fire risk assessment done previously. Also, employers need to be careful who carries out the fire risk assessment. Wilby Ltd has been appointed to undertake a number of fire risk assessments in care homes following inspections by the fire authorities who found the existing risk assessments carried out by another consultancy to be wholly inadequate”.

Fire safety legislation in the UK requires fire risk assessments to be carried out and routinely reviewed, and for measures to be in place to prevent fires and protect the lives of people in and around the property.
