Health & Safety Executive Asbestos website is re-launched
Jan 1, 2010
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has re-launched its asbestos website at a time when yet another company is fined for breaching asbestos related laws.
The company in question was a building contractor working in a school in Somerset. It was fined £1,100 with £500 costs after pleading guilty to two breaches of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006.
The HSE Inspector highlighted the need to use licensed asbestos contractors and to have a competent project manager in place to oversee the works.
The re-launched website is essential reading for any person responsible for a commercial property or responsible for employees who may be exposed to asbestos containing materials.
The HSE provides information on the duty to manage asbestos and details of asbestos health & safety law. There are downloadable resource materials including a guide to managing asbestos in premises. The “Hidden Killer” campaign is featured on the site – this campaign is aimed at tradesmen such as plumbers, electricians and builders who may be exposed to asbestos containing materials on a daily basis.
