Ladder Exchange 2008
Jan 1, 2010
After the success of the campaign in 2007, Ladder Exchange 2008 started on 1st September. The importance of this campaign was made evident by a court case on 22 September 2008 in which an employer was fined £13,400 with £3,380 costs following an accident when an employee fell from a ladder. The employee suffered a fractured skull, a broken neck and a broken leg when the ladder he was using, which was balanced on shipping containers, slipped.
The Ladder Exchange 2008 is a safety campaign not only designed to remove “dodgy” ladders from the workplace, it also provides an opportunity to review pre-use checks, training and supervision.
A number of organisations are offering discounts of up to 50% on the purchase of new ladders in part exchange against broken, damaged or bent ladders.
The HSE is providing free e-Bulletins, campaign materials and advice on maintenance and the safe use of ladders. See www.hse.gov.uk/falls/ladderexchange.htm for further information.
