Risk Assessment a Key Message
Jan 1, 2010
Risk assessment has again come to the top of the pile of issues for attention, as it is the theme for the European Campaign for Safety and Health at Work 2008–09. This two year campaign, which has European Week in the UK on 20–24 October 2008, seeks to take away the mystery many employers find surrounding risk assessment. It also aims to raise awareness of risk assessment and provide information and practical advice.
Mark Dalton, Wilby Risk Management comments:
Risk assessment is not all about forms, calculations and risk ratings. Risk assessment is simply asking whether you have done everything you could reasonably practicably do to make things safe or is there something more you could do? If you can do something more, then do it within a sensible timescale. Risk assessments are for the benefit of people exposed to the risk. Don’t leave the assessment on the shelf – show them to your employees. Use forms and words that employees will read and understand.
Wilby Risk Management provides bespoke training courses on risk assessment, free from complicated jargon, so clients can confidently and competently carry out their own basic risk assessments.
As a word of warning, in September 2008 fire-fighters and paramedics in Essex had to attend an incident where a member of an organisation’s facilities management team fell from a ladder onto a flat roof. He had been carrying out a risk assessment.
